Education has no boundaries, and nothing is able enough to limit it. Learning has the diverse capacity to enlighten the students’ mind and go beyond the zone of textbooks. Higher education is where students are acquainted with the practical know-how and in-depth understanding of the particular discipline. The objective of teaching should be to deliver the finest knowledge of the discipline to the students which enhances their insightful characteristic. To achieve this objective, teachers need to understand the minds and the diverse adaptive nature of the students by devoting maximum valuable time to them and helping them grasp the right kind of knowledge through the right mediums. Unfortunately, it is observed that most of the teacher’s time gets consumed in grading and assessing tasks and the idea of quality learning takes a back seat. Also in many cases, the gap between the student and teacher remains unbridged due to the lack of mutual understanding. To generate a student-centered learning environment, the teachers need to prioritize their tasks as to what is more important and needs personalized attention and what tasks can be managed through other resources.

How is Artificial Intelligence changing the learning environment?

An alternate resource which can assist the process of teaching is the human made boon called Artificial Intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a human-designed intelligence system that facilitates the repetitive, calculative and analytical assessment, interpretation and information providing processes through a program run by a machine (computer). Teachers need to make the best possible use of this technology-enhanced education to promote a comfortable and adaptive learning environment. The tasks like grading and feedback which take a maximum of teachers’ time can be automated and done by computers. The automated feedback system is capable of grading and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of students, enabling the teachers to understand each student well without any bias and much effort. Teachers may instead make use of the automated feedback and focus on polishing the strengths of students and help them overcome their weaknesses to produce the desired output.

Also, AI creates a learning and growing class environment by promoting customized learning through active engagement of students with the AI-enhanced learning material. Teachers may use AI to facilitate the flow of knowledge and information and make things more understandable and relatable to students by using customized digital plans, preparing a series of tasks and teaching the material to educate students. Artificially intelligent classrooms allow students to engage in the process of learning and teachers can better communicate by being able to open many folds of a single subject/topic through interactive elements like audio, video, and self-assessment tools.

Why do we need to use AI?

As explained above many tasks can be better managed by AI facilitators and thus should be done in a similar way to save time. Teachers should do what they are best at, which cannot be done by machines because the human mind is the supreme intelligence tool (as we know it). Higher education other than imparting knowledge and training also makes an individual sensitive enough to understand and relate that knowledge with the world and other humans, influencing essential characteristics like creativity, desires, the idea of collaboration, skills and need for socializing. Hence, personalizing the service is the need and should be the priority of the teacher who gets the role of a mentor. The teacher requires to be a motivator to inculcate the value of education, the mediums to use and practice the education and ways to identify the possible opportunities with the help of education. Education goes way beyond broadcasting information and providing grades. The teacher, as a guide, allows students to connect the knowledge dots and make sense out of the picture thus created to fulfill the primary objective of sole teaching. Therefore, we argue that a teacher has many roles to play to reach the student and should not restrict to few customary practices of teaching.

 Technology is of immense importance but can never replace teachers so let’s not try to exchange their places.
